Review: Deadweight

“Stroking The Moon”
(Alternative Tentacles)

Despite an incredibly heavy undercurrent to the majority of their material, there’s just something so incredibly lame about Deadweight’s Stroking The Moon.

The funked-up groove of tracks such as “The Bottle Song” are this horrid mix of Fishbone and late Jimi Hendrix that is as disturbing as it is laden with wah-pedal tomfoolery. Furthermore, they have this angular approach to everything that is jumpy and almost as nervous as System Of A Down—without all of the “boo-yeah” bantering.

Even worse, they can’t seem to stick to any single genre, blending the flaccidness of the Counting Crowes with the wank of Infectious Grooves on “Capacity,” something that would best be buried under the Jersey Turnpike with every other “accident.” It’s almost appalling that Jello Biafra could find something twitchier and more disjointed than him…and still put it out.
