Review: Thistle

Thistle
“Oxygen Ep”
(Tiberius Records)

This record is a bit confusing to me. I don’t hate it, but don’t really love it either. Thistle have an indy rock feel to them, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but then again at times it sounds played out. The major problem I have with this CD is the songs build up but fail to achieve a decent climax. Songs like ‘Consonants That Kill’ and ‘Part II’ just seem to float around without ever getting to the point.

These guys could stand to fine-tune their songwriting and focus on hooks instead of the spaced out jams. The vocals show a bit of promise but can be kind of whiny at times, making it hard to listen to repeatedly. The song ‘Oxygen’ is by far the band’s best material on this release, as the song is punchy, with enough ear candy to make you listen again. Not a bad first effort from a band that shows a lot of promise.
