The Plot to Blow Up The Eiffel Tower have put out one of the most dynamic, catchy and innovative pieces of music ever to come out of San Diego. Dissertation Honey is a thirteen track journey through swing and jazz influenced hardcore punk, taking cues from DC bands like Nation of Ulysses, while paying tribute to post-punk heroes Gang of Four and indie-rock legends Fugazi. The mixture comes together with a raw presentation, alternating between a bass guitars distorted low rumble, a polyrhythmic punk catastrophe, and softly orchestrated jazz interludes. The record comes together through drum-driven dance beats and catchy chorus lines.
Though presenting an album inducing an obvious physical and emotional reaction, The Plot still carries a message. Lyrics address topics like the common pressure of corporate America and current real-life problems of bigotry and homophobia. Pairing the message with a truly artistic attitude, Dissertation, Honey is dotted with contributions; Kailani Anderson appears reciting poetry at each end of the full length, and Kelly Kotner dishes out an incredible guest vocal appearance. The horns intertwined throughout the album help pave the path between songs, and enhance the albums presentation by creating different emotional introductions for every track. Dissertation, Honey is a unique and energetic release. As a fan of independent music, buy this record.
