Review: The Riptones

The Riptones
“Slant 6”
(Sparkletone)

Mix Junior Brown with The Ventures and the Stax sound and you have the excellent instrumental combo The Riptones. The rootsy rockers in this group got swing, rhythm and tasty licks that take us down South. The Chicago ensemble counts doghouse bass and a Telecaster guitar as signature elements of its music. In this release the group reprises some songs from its repertoire like “Don’t Touch My Hair” and “Close Shave” with some new songs. There are also two guest musicians: Joshua Quinlan (alto sax) and John Pecak (Hammond B3 organ).
