This Orange County five-some has a lot going for it. While not nearly as overtly political as Rage Against the Machine or Propagandhi, Unit F is still able to come across as a band who knows what’s going on in the world around them. To top it all off, they’re pretty darn fine musicians, if occasionally a little heavy on the guitars. Virtually every aspect of American society is questioned by singers Daryl “Skytzo” Willis and Mel Torment, from corporate greed in “Mr. Machine” to the questionable involvement of the CIA in international scandals in “Salvador BBQ”. Perhaps the most poignant track is “Daddy Don’t”, a Youth Brigade sounding tirade against domestic violence and child abuse. Lest you get the impression that these guys are super serious songwriters with no time for fun and games, tracks such as “My Baby Barfed” help to lighten the mood. “Hollow City” represents Unit F’s first LP, but judging by its overall quality, certainly not its last.
