The Des Moines, Iowa unit has been tearing it up since 1995 and have achieved monster success in their metal genre.
Image is obviously an important factor in the creation of the juggernaut that is Slipknot.
In a recent BBC special, band founder and percussionist Shawn Crahan remarked about the inception of his character as the “clown”.
“I had gotten a version of this mask when I was 14,” Crahan says while holding his mask. “I just never knew why it was in my world but it was always around me. Then one day, it just so happened, it was that moment of clarity to decide what I want to project. This thing has no fuckin’ limits.”
Singer Corey Taylor (who at the time was developing in his own band Stone Sour) recollected his first exposure to the band that he would ultimately end up fronting, “It was so many different things all at once,” he recalled of the experience. “It was visual. It was visceral. It was antagonistic. It was dangerous. It was powerful. I had never seen a band like that before.”
