M83
“Before the Dawn Heals Us”
(Mute)

More of the same from the French electronic-synth supergroup M83, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. M83 is, err, was initially Anthony Gonzalez (who plays guitar, keyboards and occasionally sings) with guests/friends, but M83 now includes a ‘real’ second guitarist, bassist and drummer. Overall, “Before the Dawn Heals Us” is a lot like Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. It’s a bit on the light side and feels slightly commercialized (whatever that means), but that doesn’t mean the charm has been lost or the style overdone. Excellent tracks like “Don’t Save Us From the Flames” and “*” keep you afloat on this 62 minute album, though I’d recommend to the virgin listener that you experience their previous release,”Dead Cities, Red Seas and Lost Ghosts”, which is the Star Trek II: Wrath of Kahn of M83’s discography.
