Review: Lenny Kravitz

Lenny Kravitz
““Greatest Hits””
(Virgin Records)

Undeniably one of the most spiritual and soulful artists to grace the music scene in recent years, Kravitz has accumulated a remarkable spectrum of successes to include on a greatest hits album that has oddly been put together in the junior of his career.  Gentle, honey-mouthed love ballads and zealous rock anthems are strategically assembled from the five albums of his decade long presence, except for his latest creation, “Again”.  Mildly sappy and radio-friendly, but not all that compelling, Kravitz follows his lyrical formula of repetition and loses the energy and vigor he is typically characterized by.  We all know his recent work well, but this collection is also reminiscent of a time when Kravitz’ neo-hippie ideals and passion really shine through.  If you’’ve got a sweet tooth for the man or are just curious about earlier works, this is the perfect place to start satisfying those cravings.
