Review: Steve Von Till

Steve Von Till
“If I Should Fall to the Field”
(Neurot)

This is the second solo CD of Neurosis frontman Steve Von Till.  Clearly he’s easily established himself as the West Coast Michael Gira from his increasingly Swansish work with Neurosis to the dark, experimental folk music contained on his solo records.

This is either love it or hate it stuff.  Steve sounds like he’s whispering his breathy secrets right into your ear with every instrument taking the backseat to his earnest, rugged voice.  Almost an uncomfortably earnest release without a hint of irony or humor, but this proves here to be a good thing.  Features a cover of Neil Young’s “Running Dry (Requiem for Rockets)”.
