This new Tortoise album has a real throwback feel to it. Mixing a few new sounds and switched-up tempos with the solid avant-instrumental jazz-rock stylings of ‘Millions Now Living’ helps to take their now tried and true sound to slightly new and mildly better places. The repetitiveness has a calming quality, but the uniformity of the sound tends to induce momentary losses of consciousness, although on a few occasions the feeling of amnesia is quite refreshing.
There are incredible hidden textures that reveal themselves with each listen and the sound is wonderfully dense, with a tendency to seem simple all the while hiding intelligent structures and smart post-rock rhythms. Organic ambient melodies awash in a pastiche of synthesized mathematical harmonies. Tortoise does it again. Wait, this band is called Parlour.
