Review: Nik Freitas

Nik Freitas
“Here’s Laughing At You”
(Future Farmer)

Brendan Benson, Beck Hanson and even a bit of Ben Folds appear as cloud shapes in the sky of Nik Freitas’ world. Guitars, piano, light percussion and a lovely boyish voice telling stories with exquisite melody and a strong sense of hook make this an incredibly approachable disc for a broad range of music fans. These 11 songs are fun and poppy with tendencies towards folk and psych, as well as Beatlemania. But what really draws you in is an almost intangible eeriness veiling the album in mystery and wonder. Listen to this album a few times and see if you don’t notice the stark honesty looming over the album. Pretty impressive for a debut.
