Anti-Flag’s frontman goes solo with a stripped down folk album, backed only by his sometimes acoustic, mostly distorted guitar. Sane employs a musical approach borrowed almost entirely from legendary songwriter Billy Bragg. Emotional and ironic, topics here unsurprisingly touch upon political ideology, but also venture into love, boxing, growing up (appropriate, considering Justin’s 19 years) and cross-country road trips. The vocals tend to be a bit whiny, and the lyrics ramble a bit, but still an impressive release for this youngster. Look for bigger and better things from Justin as a solo artist. Dashboard Confessional and their screaming infidelities could be out of a job soon.
