Review: Donkey

Donkey
“Big Sur”
(Accretions)

This concept album is heavily experimental keyboard and guitar improvisations on the Big Sur area. The title “Crick” of the first of three lengthy compositions suggests a small creek heard in this piece and the wrenched muscles resulting from a mile-long leap on the spring-loaded mule described in the liner notes.

It is perhaps best to the let the impressionism remain environmental on “Crick”, “Wood” and “Fog” on this duo’s extemporaneous recording. “Crick” is done line in studio to multi-track without overdubs or linear edits. This sampler collage from Donkey is another chapter in the prolific and avant-garde Trummerflora collective.
