I really enjoyed the last album I reviewed from G7 Welcoming Committee, “Good Times Coming Back Again,” by the Greg MacPherson Band. I enjoyed it so much that I can’t resist the opportunity to shamelessly shill for it again: it’s excellent, I promise.
So I had high hopes for what was to come from Che Chapter 127. I was slightly disappointed, if only because this outfit is targeting your mind and your conscience more than your ear. It wouldn’t be unfair or inaccurate to describe this band as a Canadian Rage
Against the Machine.
Che Chapter 127 is less musically diverse than Rage, but their sound and their politics make a comparison to de la Rocha and crew inevitable. Singer Meegan has a unique voice and a distinctive, urgent delivery, and the lyrics are thought-provoking, even if they’re about as subtle as a brick to the face. On the other hand, that’s kind of the point.
Tackling topics from homophobic violence (“A Thousand Points of Light”) to abortion (“The Choicelessness Parade”) to the unexamined, sheepish life of modern man (“Path of Least Resistance”), Che Chapter 127 is pushing a timely message and one that deserves to be heard and considered.
