“Mega”
(Marriage)

What I have in place of a CD and jacket is a CDR and a doublesided blue piece of paper full of scribblings and doodles, which, at first glance, appears to been written/drawn by an 11 year old with a heart murmur. Upon closer inspection, this apparent insanity is really the loving and detailed work of one Jona Bechtolt, whose music can be hastily compared to a mix of The Unicorns, Black Dice and Thanksgiving. The latter, of course, isn’t exactly a stranger to Jona (they’ve toured) and you can also find Jona’s musical molestations on that and both The Blow AND Little Wing’s last albums (among others). But that’s not important. What IS important is “Mega”, which has 15 tracks that don’t really go together in a cohesive format, but then again, they belong exactly how they are. It’s hard to explain, really. If you’re a Marriage records fan, you already know about Jona and his work, so this review isn’t exactly news; for those unfamiliar, visit the site, download mp3s and then maybe buy the vinyl. And call your mom, she likes it when you do that.
