Reveiw: Xiu Xiu

Xiu Xiu
““Knife Play””
(5RC)

This record is difficult to talk about, because it’s that damn amazing.  If I had to try to tell somebody what Xiu Xiu sounds like, I’d say  they were a cross between Einsturzende Neubauten and Talk Talk, but I don’t think Xiu Xiu have either band in mind.  Over the melodic clatter of pot and pan lids, throbbing programs, waves of keyboard and pump organ, bursts of metallic static, spare guitar and gently plodding bass, there is a voice.  The voice is like an elegant weapon and a panic attack.  The words it uses seem as if they were frantically scribbled down on little bits of paper by someone sitting next to the bed of a fever victim who was crying out loud in their sleep.  Perhaps very little of this makes much sense, but Xiu Xiu are not about making sense.  Xiu Xiu are about making music, and this is some of the best new music I’ve heard in a long time.  Like all other 5RC releases, listen to with caution and care.  Wow.
