Lee “Scratch” Perry
“Cutting Razor: Rare Cuts from The Black Ark”
(Heartbeat)

Before 1973 Lee Perry had to constrain his genius and creativity through the lens of other peoples’ studios, often when he was hired for work. However, at the end 1973 he set up his Black Ark Studio (alternately, the Black Art of Black Hawk Studio) behind his own home. Lee put a 4-track Teac through its paces during one half-dozen years of concentrated activity at the studio. Here, Heartbeat gathers together some monster dub sounds, proto reggae and Jamaican soul cut at Black Ark and taken from the original masters with Perry’s blessing.
