Review: Ex Models

Ex Models
“Zoo Psychology”
(Frenchkiss Records)

A swift kick to the head, face, stomach, shoulder, foot, pinky, nose, back. Repeat that for 15 tracks and you walk away from the Ex Models a little bloodied, but with a new favorite band. The Ex Models sound like Devo being ravaged by System of a Down. Hailing from Frenchkiss Records (with other favorites Les Savy Fav and The Apes), Ex Models live up to their label’s reputation. They are new-wave in all its glory and they want to rub your face in it.

Through falsettos, off time signatures and freight train tempos, Ex Models hit every point they go after and raise the bar for anyone following in their footsteps. On “brand new panties” the Ex Models throw out bass lines that will leave Flea open mouthed and wide eyed. Ex Models are just ending a nationwide tour and their last show is with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs at Irving Plaza in New York (home of Frenchkiss Records). Not a bad band to be opening for. This isn’t for everyone’s pallete, but if you have taken Les Savy Fav into your heart, the Ex Models will fit right in.
